WILKES-BARRE: The 7th Annual Volunteers of America Celebrity Dinner will feature Bill Walton, the former UCLA great and NBA legend, as the guest speaker. The dinner will take place May 12 at Genetti Hotel and Convention Center, East Market Street, Wilkes-Barre. In addition to the dinner, a VIP reception with Walton is planned and a silent auction will feature many items signed by Walton and other sports memorabilia.
Among his many accomplishments, Walton was a two-time national champion and a three-time NCAA Player of the Year as the leader of the UCLA Bruins from 1972-’74. He also earned Academic All-American honors in each of those years and won world championships with the Portland Trailblazers in 1977 and Boston Celtics in 1986. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 and was named among the NBA’s 50 greatest players of all time in 1997. Following his playing career, Walton was an award-winning television analyst. In 2001, he was the inaugural inductee into the Grateful Dead Hall of Honor and in 2002 he received the NBA’s Humanitarian Award.
Volunteers of America is one of the oldest faith-based human services agencies in the country. The organization arrived in the region in 1896 and offers a number of programs serving at-risk youth, low-income families, individuals with disabilities and the elderly. The agency is also serving homeless young adults.
Tickets are $100 for adults and $50 for students when accompanied by an adult. Tickets for the VIP reception are limited. For more information, call 825-5261.
