Council’s drive helps restock food pantries

The Workplace Council of the Volunteer Action Center, a division of United Way of Wyoming Valley, recently held its 20th annual Christmas in July food drive to restock the shelves at community food banks. This year, 23 local businesses collected more than 58,000 pounds of food which will be distributed by the Commission on Economic Opportunity to more than 90 local food pantries. In addition, Workplace Council presented grants to the St. Vincent De Paul Kitchen and Salvation Army Citadel to assist them in restocking their food banks. An Awards Breakfast, sponsored by Pride Mobility, recognized the top three companies which collected the largest employee per capita amount of food: Guard Financial Group, Trion Industries and Penn Millers. Guard Insurance Group was also presented with a special award for collecting more than 28,000 pounds of food.
