Christian Aponte, a June graduate of Wyoming Valley West High School, has been awarded a scholarship from Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS). The scholarships, which are offered to minority students from low-income families, can be used at the college or university of the recipient’s choice, and cover tuition and other college expenses from freshman year through graduation. Aponte has chosen to continue his education at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. He is one of 1,000 students around the country chosen to receive a 2009 GMS scholarship administered by UNCF in partnership with the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars, the Asian and Pacific American Islander Scholarship Fund and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Aponte is the son of Andre Aponte and Ana M. Saez, Kingston.
Carmelo Pioquinto and Janan Trotter, were the recipients of the Mr. Cy Awards presented by the Greater Nanticoke Area Elementary PTA. A $50 bond is presented annually to two students from Kennedy Elementary and the GNA Elementary Center who have been the most helpful during the school year. The award is presented in memory of Cyril Kubricki, former custodian of Lincoln Elementary.
Maia Britton, a student at the GNA Elementary School, Nanticoke, received the Dolores Mierzwa Award presented by the GNA Elementary PTA. A $50 bond is presented annually to the fifth-grade student who is the most well-rounded reader and demonstrates a love of reading. The award is presented in memory of Dolores Mierzwa, former elementary library aide.
Jessica Hafner and Leah Natt, second-grade students at Wyoming Area Catholic School, Exeter, achieved high scores in the Accelerated Reader Program and completed the summer program with perfect attendance and diligent work. School librarian Theresa Sabetta is the program coordinator.
Ethan Minier, Benton, earned a Salutatorian Scholarship from York College of Pennsylvania. Minier is a first-year Spanish major and a graduate of Benton Area Junior-Senior High School. The Salutatorian Scholarship is a one-half tuition scholarship per year for entering first time, full-time freshmen who were salutatorians of their high schools and have a combined SAT score of 1150 or higher.
