Names and Faces

Ami Patricia Temarantz, daughter of Barbara Ann Temarantz, Wilkes-Barre, and the late Robert David Temarantz, graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Connecticut College, New London, Conn., on May 17 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology and a certificate in museum studies. Temarantz was awarded the Claire Garber Goodman Award in April for her high academic achievement and dedication to anthropology. She received the Margaret King Moore and Thomas R. Moore Yale Endowed Travel Fellowship in March of 2008 to conduct academic research in the United Kingdom and the Steven and Pamela Baker Reardon Fellowship in March 2007 to conduct academic research in the United Kingdom and Spain. In the fall of 2007 she spent the semester abroad in Cusco, Peru, and Manu National Park in the Peruvian Amazon. She completed a year-long senior honors thesis based on her field experiences. Temarantz has completed internships at the Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic, Conn., and at Coral Cay Conservation, London, United Kingdom. She is attending Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in international development. Temarantz is a 2005 graduate of Wyoming Seminary. She is the granddaughter of the late Andrew and Anna O’Herko and the late Anthony and Venus Temarantz.

Monica R. Esopi, a senior at Dallas High School, is a winner of the Rensselaer Medal from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Rensselaer Medal is given to students who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science. To be honored with the medal, a student must be a member of the junior class and the school’s single most promising science and mathematics student. Esopi is the daughter of E. Gene and Margaret Esopi, Dallas. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the volleyball team and a participant in the Science Olympiad, JETS competition and LifeSmarts. She also participates on a travel volleyball team, plays the piano, and is actively involved with the music program and youth group at Shavertown Methodist Church.

Eric Grodzicki, a fifth-grade student at the Greater Nanticoke Area Elementary Center, Nanticoke, was selected as the Student of the Month for September. Joseph Russo, a second-grade student at Kennedy Elementary Center, Nanticoke, was selected as the Student of the Month for October. The program is designed to promote and reward good citizenship. Local vendors provide prizes.

Ali Young, daughter of Steve and Leslie Young, Mountain Top, participated in the summer Semester-At-Sea Program to Spain, Turkey, Bulgaria, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Morocco and Croatia. Young is a senior at King’s College majoring in English literature and writing. She is a member of the King’s Players, Sigma Tau Delta and has written for the school newspaper.
