Names and Faces

Daniel Kopec, an eighth-grade student at Wyoming Seminary Lower School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Kopec, Kingston, recently won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee contest and a chance to continue on to state competition. Ben Hornung, eighth grade, son of John and Dr. Claire Hornung, Forty Fort, was runner-up. Kopec and Hornung were among 23 competitors from grades 5-8 to compete in the contest. The school-level Bee, which requires students to answer oral questions on U.S. cities, world cultures and world geography, was the first round in the 22nd annual National Geographic Bee. Social studies teacher William Davis was the Bee moderator.

Jason Platts, Tunkhannock, and Brian Glowatski, Lafayette, N.J., Misericordia University medical imaging majors, were awarded national scholarships by Lambda Nu, the national honor society for the radiologic and imaging sciences. The competitive scholarships are based on GPA, financial need, recommendations of the department chairperson and a written essay. The students were selected from 50 applicants nationwide for their commitment to the profession and their compassion toward patients. Platts, son of Marcia Platts, Tunkhannock, and Thomas Platts, Australia, is a senior. Glowatski, son of Tom and Karen Glowatski, Lafayette, N.J., is a junior. The students were nominated by Elaine Halesey, Ed.D., R.T. (R) (QM), the professor and chairperson of the Department of Medical Imaging.

Bryce T. Mongeon, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2012, has been inducted into the Colgate chapter of the national scholastic honorary society of Phi Eta Sigma which recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of first-year students. The approximately 160 students who were honored at a fall banquet had earned averages of at least 3.5 during their first year at the university. Mongeon, currently a sophomore at Colgate, is the son of Tory T. Mongeon and Virginia M. Mongeon, Mountain Top. Mongeon is a graduate of Crestwood Junior-Senior High School.
