Solomon drives raise money for packages for troops

For the past five years, students, faculty and support staff at Solomon/Plains Memorial Elementary School conducted various drives to raise funds to purchase items for soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Coordinated by teacher Antoinette Luce, this year’s collection raised enough money to purchase 300-minute prepaid phone cards, personal products and other items. They filled 29 packages that were mailed to members of local Reserve and National Guard units. Additional funds were donated to the Luzerne Foundation to benefit the NEPA Veterans Multi-Care Alliance that assists all veterans with a variety of needs. Participants from left, first row: students Nathan Wilson, Iliana Hernandez, Josh Wychock, Quinn Daniels, Breanne Georgetti, Rachel Wallace. Second row: teacher associates Diane Waligun, Doris Williams, Susan Shovlin; Sean Flynn, principal; and Luce.
