HAZLETON — A Hazleton man was arrested at about 6 a.m. on Saturday after he allegedly stole over $500 in goods from Giant Supermarket on South Locust Street.

According to police, Joel Castillo-Pena, driving a Ford Explorer, fled the scene with two other suspects.

Castillo-Pena broke numerous vehicle and traffic laws during the pursuit, almost striking a police patrol unit, according to police.

Numerous police vehicles were engaged in the pursuit, which ended in Schuylkill County in the area of 28 S. Logan St., McAdoo, where Castillo-Pena and two passengers attempted to flee on foot.

Police said they repeatedly ordered Castillo-Pena to stop and put up his hands, but he refused. Police then used a Taser to subdue him before taking him into custody. Two other males who fled on foot were not located by police.

According to police, Castillo-Pena refused a blood alcohol test.

Castillo-Pena was taken to headquarters, searched and found to be in possession of a brick of heroin and a small amount of marijuana, police said.

He was charged with aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, DUI, retail theft, possession of heroin, operating a vehicle with a suspended licence and other traffic-related offenses.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Joseph D. Zola and jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for inability to post $50,000 bail.
