Capsule reviews of continuing films follow:
THE DARK KNIGHT — The loss of Heath Ledger has amplified the buzz on this Batman incarnation — and Ledger’s crazed performance as the Joker — to extraordinary levels. PG-13 for intense violence and some menace. 152 minutes.
GET SMART — Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway in explosive but obvious TV-inspired scenarios. PG-13 for rude humor, violence, language. 111 minutes.
1/2
HANCOCK — Will Smith is back in this foul-mouthed-misanthrope-as-superhero flick with a crisp set up but nowhere else to go. PG-13 for sci-fi action and violence, and language. 92 minutes.
HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY — Guillermo del Toro has outdone himself in absurd humor and wild imagination. PG-13 for sci-fi action, violence and language. 110 minutes.
JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH — A threesome led by Brendan Fraser heads down below after discovering Jules Verne’s classic sci-fi novel might be based on an actual trip to the Earth’s center. PG for adventure action and scary moments. 93 minutes.
1/2
MAMMA MIA! — The catchy 1970s ABBA pop hit inspired a huge Broadway musical a decade ago and now is the basis for a massive mess of a movie that’s also exuberantly goofy fun. PG-13 for some sex-related comments. 108 minutes.
SPACE CHIMPS – A lazy nonconformist learns to take his responsibilities seriously and saves the day. Pretty much like “Kung Fu Panda.” Only in space. With monkeys. And not as funny. G. 80 minutes.
1/2
STEP BROTHERS — Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are 40-year-olds who’ve never left home and are forced to share a bedroom when their parents get married. A prolonged, painfully unfunny game of one-upmanship results. R for crude and sexual content and pervasive language. 112 minutes.
1/2
WALL-E — Within this futuristic sci-fi adventure lies an artistic truth: Pixar’s track record remains impeccable. G. 97 minutes.
1/2
WANTED — A miserable cubicle dweller morphs into master assassin under the tutelage of Angelina Jolie, aptly named Fox. R for bloody violence, language and some sexuality. 110 minutes.
THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE — David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson slip comfortably back into the roles that made them superstars in the 1990s, but the movie itself never feels like more than an extended episode. PG-13 for violent and disturbing content and thematic material. 104 minutes.
