Charter attacks blasted

The night after the leaders of the Luzerne County Democratic Party’s Second District endorsed a “no” vote in November on the county Government Study Commission’s Home Rule Charter, the commission responded, calling attacks on the charter uninformed and unfounded.

“These people that are against the charter, these people that have a political stake in it, can’t get their story straight,” commission Chairman Jim Haggerty said at the group’s Wednesday meeting, citing a newspaper article and a letter to the editor, both published in Tuesday’s Times Leader, as an example.

Haggerty quoted an article in Tuesday’s edition in which Democratic Party Second District Chairman Casey Evans alleged that, under the proposed charter, “there is no separation of powers. The council is going to run the show.”

Haggerty drew a comparison between Evans’ statements and a letter to the editor in which Luzerne County Prothonotary Carolee Medico Olenginski compared the council-appointed manager the charter proposes to a dictator.

“What these things show, is that the much of the opposition to the charter is uninformed as to the way things would work,” Haggerty said.
