A woman walking down South Main Street in Ashley looked a bit apprehensive as she passed Dave and Karen Phillips’ front yard. In fact, on her way back down the street, she crossed onto the other side, perhaps to avoid passing the place again.

Walk this way. A lighted archway greets visitors to 137 Old River Road in South Wilkes-Barre.

Might’ve been the coffin, purchased from eBay and displayed prominently out front, that did her in. Or the 1959 Chrysler hearse in the driveway. Or crazed movie murderer Michael Myers staring at her from the side lawn.
Yes, the Phillips’ residence at 120 S. Main St. in Ashley is fairly frightening, but it’s far from a lone werewolf around here this time of year. Halloween has become big business, and it’s putting up quite a fight with Christmas when it comes to home decor.
Here’s just a small sampling of hair-raising houses sure to spook anyone so inclined to hop into the car for a mini tour on this day of days.
