EDWARDSVILLE — Wyoming Valley Health Care System’s Diabetes Management & Nutrition Center and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Institute and Stroke Program will host a Community Health and Wellness Fair from 8-11 a.m. on Saturday at the Thomas P. Saxton Medical Pavilion.

The event will combine a host of informative materials and healthful services, including glucose lab screenings and lipid profiles (12-hour fast recommended); vision and foot screenings; stroke risk assessments; a STAR Fitness Open House; healthy recipes and food sampling; flu vaccinations (priority given to individuals with diabetes); prizes and giveaways (including a STAR Fitness membership valued at more than $500); and much more.
Dr. Michael Adler, chief of endocrinology and metabolism at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, will present “Diabetes and Special Situations” at 10 a.m. Additional information will be available from the Women’s Imaging Center, Pennant Laboratories, the American Diabetes Association and others.

WILKES-BARRE TWP. – A Book Fair to benefit Wyoming Valley Children’s Association will be held on Sunday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, Arena Hub Plaza. The agency will receive a percentage of all sales made with a fundraising voucher on that day.
In addition, a children’s story hour with author Patricia Thomas will be held at 2 p.m. and at 4 p.m. the Rev. James Paisley, pastor of Saint Therese’s Church in Shavertown, will autograph his holiday CD that is being sold to benefit the agency.
Wyoming Valley Children’s Association is a nonprofit agency that provides physical, occupational and speech therapy to local children who have developmental disabilities and preschool education to children of all abilities.

WILKES-BARRE — The Healthy Humorist is making a house call for Geisinger Health System’s free health fair from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday at the Ramada Inn, Independence Ballroom, Public Square. The event is open to the public.
Dr. Brad Nieder, nationally known as the Healthy Humorist, entertains, enlightens and inspires audiences across the country with a unique blend of health care comedy and wellness advice.
The health fair will feature free screenings for blood pressure; cholesterol (fasting is recommended); glucose; sleep; hearing; heart health; strength, flexibility and range of motion. Skin checks will be available.

WILKES-BARRE — TGI Friday’s Restaurant is commemorating National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month by sponsoring Dine Out for Pancreatic Cancer.
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will receive a percentage of sales proceeds from the Wilkes-Barre and Dickson City locations every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in November. In order to qualify for the donation, a fundraiser coupon must be presented at the time of purchase.

WILKES-BARRE — “Be The Match,”a free bone marrow donor screening, will be held from noon-4 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the East End Primitive Church, corner of Kidder and Laurel streets.
The screening, which entails a simple swab of the cheek, is intended for persons, ages 18-65 and in general good health, who wish to help those with leukemia by becoming a member of the National Bone Marrow Registry.

WILKES-BARRE TWP. — A Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Night with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will be held on Nov. 28 at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

Adam, urogynecology specialist, has joined the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Geisinger Wyoming Valley. Adam also serves as vice-chairman of Quality and Performance Improvement for Geisinger’s Women’s Health Service Line. In that position, he will work with Geisinger clinicians and administrative staff on programs to improve care quality for Women’s Health patients.
Board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Adam is fellowship-trained in complex pelvic surgery and specializes in correcting vaginal and rectal deformities and procedures to correct pelvic organ prolapse and fecal and urinary incontinence.
Dr. William Krywicki, FAAOS, orthopedic surgeon and director of sports medicine at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center and chief of orthopedics for Geisinger Health System, was recently elected president of the Hughston Orthopaedic Society.
The Hughston Society is a cadre of orthopedic surgeons and primary-care physicians who were trained in the Hughston philosophy of care and are dedicated to research, education, training and quality treatment of musculoskeletal injury and disease.
