Local fire companies get grants

Four Luzerne County volunteer fire departments have received grants from the Department of Homeland Security.

The latest round of funding is part of more than $565 million available for operations and safety programs, as well as vehicle acquisition.

The local departments receiving money, announced by U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, are:

Mocanaqua Volunteer Fire Company #1 - $46,645

White Haven Fire Co. #1 - $26,990

Harding Fire Company - $21,505

Wright Township Volunteer Firemen’s Association - $11,400

“These fire prevention and safety programs will help protect the citizens of Pennsylvania and the firefighters who risk their lives every day,” Specter said. “I commend the Department of Homeland Security for recognizing this priority and for its continued support of our nation’s fire services.”
