KINGSTON – Authorities say a clerk at a newsstand on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre purchased a luxury sport utility vehicle and at least $385,000 in real estate in two municipalities with proceeds from a marijuana distribution ring.

Robert Francis Bovolick, 27, of Sharpe Street, Kingston, was identified as the ring leader who sold large quantities of marijuana in Luzerne County since 2002, authorities said.

Bovolick was one of seven people charged on Wednesday in “Operation Bad News,” an investigation by the state Office of Attorney General Bureau of Narcotics Investigation and Drug Control and Kingston police. The charges resulted from testimony before a statewide grand jury.

According to arrest records, Bovolick was employed as a clerk at his family’s business, the Anthracite Newstand, earning approximately $26,000 per year since 2005.

It was at the Anthracite Newstand, arrest records say, where Bovolick discovered a recording device on a marijuana customer who was working as an informant for investigators.

Bovolick became suspicious of the customer and drove him to the newsstand, where he ripped off the customer’s shirt and found the recording device, according to arrest records.

After finding the device, Bovolick asked the informant what police knew about him, arrest records say.

In a prepared news release, state Attorney General Tom Corbett said Bovolick regularly traveled to Philadelphia to obtain marijuana for redistribution in the Wilkes-Barre area. One of his main marijuana suppliers was identified in arrest records as Christopher Roberto, 23, of Ardmore, a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Arrest records say Bovolick purchased a Hummer H2 for $62,623 in 2004, and 10 residential properties – 90-92 Carlisle St., 552 S. Franklin St., 200 Park Ave., 26 Gildersleeve St. and 518 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, and 136 Sharpe St., 436-439 Elm St., 14-16 Mott St., 36-38 Gates St., and 164 Division St., Kingston – with drug proceeds.

“The only way Bovolick was able to buy 10 properties, a high-end vehicle, big-screen televisions, expensive watches and leather furniture was through marijuana sales,” Corbett said. “Bovolick is known to be a longtime marijuana dealer in the Luzerne County area, and today, he is out of business.”

An informant testified before the grand jury, arrest records say, that Bovolick “would deliver the marijuana to him at the Anthracite Newstand and various parking lots.”

Charged in “Operation Bad News,” in addition to Bovolick and Roberto are Donald Swainbank, 23, of Elm Street, Kingston; Andrew Clements, 27, of Ridge Road, Berwick; Justin Hart, 26, of Ridge Road, Catawissa; Patrick Rooney, 23, of Courtright Street, Plains Township; and Eric Kovac, 28, of Coxton Road, Duryea.

They were arraigned before District Judge Paul J. Roberts Jr. in Kingston and charged with corrupt organizations, delivery of marijuana, possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana, criminal conspiracy to deliver marijuana, and criminal use of communication facilities.

Preliminary hearings are tentatively scheduled for Nov. 6 in Central Court.

Now that we know what kind of profit can be made with the sales of the "Happy grass," with more people facing more debts and no jobs, economy at it's lowest, we'll have more dealers attracted to this area than we do now. It's almost 2009, and this kid has been in the marijuana business since 2002? How long does a sting let someone profit before they shut them down? This is outrageous! How many of our children did this jerk and his friends sell to? No wonder this area is becoming such a cesspool.

Such young good looking men will do well in their new home. Their neighbors will literally jump all over them. Fitting justice for drug dealers.

This does not surprise those that see youths/adults driving expensive vehicles around here when we know that their cash flow might be directly related to illegal drug transactions. Unfortunately, this is happening all over the USA. I do hope that everything these felone's acquired through their selfish-greedy-immoral and illegal actions is immediately sold at a local auction as a lesson to anyone else pumping illegal drugs into NE PA and surrounds; and the proceeds from the auctions goes directly towards the Luzerne County legalfees/prison/medical care etc. while they are locked up or Appealing their cases! Good Job kudos... to the slick undercover agents and law enforcement.......who shut them down! Keep the pressure on these unethical people....and make them pay their way!

Ah may sweet justice prevail! Bovolick's sad little pot reign in Wilkes-Barre is over. A long stay in prison will break him in good... in the most savage of ways!

Bovolick worked at his parents newstand? For 26,000 a year. He bought a 60,000 vehicle and 10 real estate properties. And his parents didn't question this spending? Maybe they are part of it?

Why did the cops wait so long for these pot heads to make so much money? Are you kidding me, they won't get in any trouble with our bleeding heart criminal justice system over there in the courthouse. Probably ARD, community service, probation... we'll see what happens.

It's kinda funny how people think these kids should be punished severely. I think that should be too. But, if when Civarella was sending kids away for wrong doing everyone asks why and says it's too harsh. Some of you people are just nuts!

From the look of the photos it appears that the police broke a "major" crime organization. Next, maybe they will lock up all the jaywalkers. Then, if they have the time, maybe solve a murder or two.

it should be legal to smoke anyway much more upside then downside. I think the money spent for this sting would have been much better spent on actual drugs, heroin and synthetic opiates. Not a few kids selling some marijuana. We treat these kids like criminals but in reality over 50% of the 18 - 25 year olds in this area, in most areas, use marijuana. they all seem pretty fine to me. the law enforcement acts like they did something great here, but really just not an important bust, waste of time really.

Get this man a job with the county and city of Wilkes Barre if it was only weed! He can get things turned around how about that for Community Service. That's a great accomplishment. And Legalize Weed look at the Jobs we need and can create here in the U.S. Honestly what is more damaging to pepole Alcohol or weed? And everyone in the valley knows an alcoholic. So who's worse off? I don't even smoke but Legalize and stop waste money and jail space for serious harmful criminals.

you know it is funny all the money that is made from the sales of pot, then look at all of the tax dollars that will be wasted on housing these people in jail for the next few years, now if you would take the profits and turn them to the gov't I think we would be out of debt in no time, and think about it people a war on drugs is a war that you can NEVER win, as long as there is a demand there WILL be a supply. legalize it and enjoy all the tax profits

Bovolick has been trafficking in marijuana since 2002 and it took law enforcement 6 years to build a case against him? I guess if he didn't discover the bug on one of his customers he'd still be selling to our sons and daughters. I hope his tax evasion conviction puts him in jail longer than his drug trafficking one.

I would much rather them selling pot as opposed to ciggaretts and alcohol...As far as crack, herion, meth...let the Sherman hills gang sell that stuff...personally...I think they kept 8 people employeed...they invested in our local economy (bought cars, homes, big screen tv's)...Have any of you bigots ever watch the Showtime series called "WEEDS"?...Everybody's doing it...Even YOU hypocripts!

What amazes me most is how long it took law enforcement to catch up to this really STUPID criminal, is it any wonder that the smart criminals on Wall Street and Corporate America are walking away unscathed with million & millions of dollars? I've speculated ever since the Hummer where this lad was getting his money from. Just like the upstanding citizen on the square who was selling t-shirts and driving around in a new Caddy. Pathetic.

Yeah, Bovolick is a hero! He kept 8 people employed. If only more young Americans can be more like Bovolick this nation would be in much better shape. Its fine people like him that invest in the local economy. And anyone that thinks selling illegal drugs is bad MUST be a hypocrite. The show WEEDS is how we should all be living our lives. I love that show with all the pot.

Maybe it takes law enforecement so long, so these idiots can stay in jail. Look at the history of the shooter for the homicide on Mayallen Street. In and out of jail. You people blaim the wrong people. The cops make the arrest. The DA does the prosecuting.

unfortunately, there isnt a fine line between entrapment and law enforcement.the entire system is corrupt. if at the very beginning of everything this was shut down, or they were given warnings which seems humane, it wouldnt have ever gotten to that point..but of course this " law enforcement" sets everybody up. sad.

What a bunch of idiots.... said...

Most of the people who left comments here are a bunch of idiots!! Do you really not care if these scumbags are selling pot to your children? Do you really not understand that pot is laced with other drugs to get your children hooked? WTF is wrong with you? This is why we have the idiot mentality in this valley. If the person selling is white and cute its ok but if there skin is any other color your opinion changes quickly. Drugs are drugs and they are illegal. I know many people who just smoked pot that are now dead because they got hooked on bigger drugs.
