Hazleton fire sends six people to hospitals

HAZLETON - Six people were transported to area hospitals after a fire at 120 W. Broad St. early Wednesday morning.

According to a news release, Hazleton firefighters responded to the building just after midnight where they found heavy smoke and occupants outside screaming that a person was trapped inside.

A person was found inside the burning building and was rushed to Hazleton General Hospital and transported to a regional trauma center.

Another person crawled out onto a roof and was rescued by firefighters. Two people jumped from a second floor window to escape the flames.

It took firefighters about an hour to bring the fire under control. No firefighters were injured, according to the news release.

Off-duty firefighters were called in to staff hose companies while firefighters battled the blaze.

The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced due to the fire.

A state police deputy fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
