New GOP survey: Barletta would beat Kanjorski

Poll says Hazleton mayor favored over incumbent 47 percent to 42 percent.

Republican Lou Barletta would defeat 12-term incumbent Paul Kanjorski by 5 percentage points if the election were held today, according to an internal poll released Monday by the Barletta campaign.

Conducted by Susquehanna Polling and Research, a Harrisburg-based Republican polling agency, the results show Barletta would receive 47 percent of the vote compared to 42 percent for Kanjorski.

The poll shows 39 percent of voters believe Kanjorski deserves to be re-elected.

Hazleton Mayor Barletta is challenging Kanjorski, a Democrat, for the 11th Congressional District seat. The two faced off in 2002 and Kanjorski defeated Barletta by 22,000 votes.

Kanjorski campaign manager Ed Mitchell would not comment verbally on the poll. He declined a request to share any internal polling results.

“It’s our policy not to comment on polls,” Mitchell said in an e-mailed statement. “We will be happy to discuss with Mr. Barletta his strong support for the Bush policies in Iraq, against the raise in the minimum wage and for privatization of Social Security.”

The Barletta camp was encouraged by the findings.

“They mirror the response Mayor Barletta receives when he travels throughout the district,” said Barletta campaign manager Vince Galko.

James Lee, president of Susquehanna Polling and Research, said the poll was conducted March 27-29, with 400 likely general election voters. Only voters with prior voting history in key election years 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2004 were contacted, he said. The margin of error is 4.9 percent.

Galko said the numbers “give real hope to the citizens of Northeastern Pennsylvania” and said the results indicate constituents are “tired of Mr. Kanjorski’s antics and want real change.”

Galko said the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee paid $26,000 to do a poll for Kanjorski on March 6, 2008.

“I am sure their numbers paint the same picture for the incumbent,” Galko said.

DCCC spokeswoman Carrie James said the organization commissioned a poll but would not release the results. She said the party would not “discuss internal strategic documents.”

Lee said the results show Barletta has a strong positive image and high name recognition in the district. Those polled gave Kanjorski low marks for job approval.

Kanjo lied about Iraq to help get the dems elected in 2006 and then when confronted continued to lie. Barletta has publicly stated many times he will not privitize Social Security. Who would you trust to tell the truth; a known liar or Barletta?

I find it interesting that no one in Kanjorski's camp will release HIS poll numbers. I wonder why that would be? I also think it is great that this poll in favor of Barletta was done BEFORE the Fox news show and all the you tube stuff. I can't wait to see the next one. Go Lou!!

Oh yes, I am sure to believe a poll coming from within the Barletta campaign. As someone who has studied political science in depth, I know that any decent poll has a plus or minus rating of 3%. This one has a 4.9%. That means the so called "5 point lead" could be a tie. And besides, polls haven't exactly had a stellar record lately...

This Democrat reluctantly supports Kanjorski - but only because of the poor quality of candidate the GOP has selected. Barletta is a self-serving egomaniac who risked destroying his town in order to score points with the xenophobic neo-Know-Nothing crowd. Making a name for himself was so important he supported an ineffective ordinance he knew was unconstitutional - after all, garnering publicity and complaining about judges is a lot easier than the hard work of truly fixing your community. Two more years of Kanjo is hard to swallow - but Barletta in Congress would be a disaster. I support Kanjorski in this run - but urge him to make it his last.

I'm sure this GOP survey is a reliable source haha. GOP needs to get it together, so does Lou. Once Lou realizes he cannot blame illegal immigrants for everything under the sun (gas prices, foreclosures, the weather...) his campaign will probably fail. The illegal immigrant fight is all he has and the uneducated people of the valley file behind him. Not saying Kanjorski is a saint either, but get real people.

What a nice thing Molly said, "if you don't agree with democrats you are uneducated"! What do you think of that?

To TK, Molly, and Mr. Price. At least Mr. Barletta has taken a stance on something! He stands for the good of the people of our area...not just his family! What has Paul Kanjorski done for this area? Give me a list - please.

Mr. Price, so you think that Mr. Barletta has cost the taxpayer more than Mr. Kanjorki did with his 11 million boondoggle? It is hard to believe any logical thinking taxpayer would want another term of such pork barrel antics, unless of course you are one of the ones on the receiving end of such benefits.

Sure, one has to take a party-commissioned poll with a grain of salt. But one cannot dispute that this race is going to be very tight. For too long, Kanjorski has manipulated and exploited the people of the 11th District. The indescribably corrupt and hopelessly out-of-touch Kanjorski has cheated us, this country, and our children's future with his endless corruption and nepotism. Whatever your party and whatever your political beliefs, you should be able to stand up for what's right and decent. Even if that means voting against your political affiliation. We need a change.

What kind of congressional district would vote out a twelve-term incumbent in favor of a freshman Congressman lined up with the shrinking minority party? Short of a major scandal or new district boundaries or a surge in Republican registration, this ought to be a safe seat for Democrats, and this expensive survey the product of disingenuous pollsters.

Barletta has guts! His EXACT ordinance is appearing all over the country! How could even the blind Democrat voters of NE PA re elect a hack like Kanjorski who stole millions for his own family!! The ignorant Democrat sheep don't mind an illegal swiping his "access" card for a $5oo order at Wal Mart at taxpayers expense!

Granted, the lead in this poll is within the margin of error, but with the Fox news piece and the YouTube videos that are showing Kanjo as he REALLY is, I think that he is worried. And, his "solutions" to high gas prices are based on an email to not buy on a particular day, and to tax the oil companies. We need somebody who is COMPETENT.

Hey Totalizer! How about the NEPA voters replacing Santorum with Casey! What a mistake that was. Nothing like running on your daddy's name, making a bunch of promises and DOING NOTHING SINCE BEING IN OFFICE in return! What a joke!!!!! Kanjorski has done NOTHING in recent memory. Illegal immigration is a NATION wide problem that our current president has sold out on! Hats off to Barletta for taking a stand for the little people and doing something to curb this dangerous and out of control problem.

Kelli & Joe have it right on! It's time for a change. Kanjo needs to go! Why do people think that all Barletta is for is illegal immigration reform(at least he's trying to do something about this HUGE problem),what has Kanjo done lately? Kanjo's hometown of Nanticoke is worse off now more than ever, and have you seen the youtube videos of him admitting to LYING(stretching the truth to get Congress)is a huge slap in the face to us all! Check it out and see his handler behind him at the table covering his face when Kanjo lets this slip, amazing! Please NEPA,do the right thing and vote Barletta,or at least not straight party. It's time for some real change!

Guin, as I said before I don't support Kanjorski because I think he's great or want to defend his every action but ONLY because I find the other option offered so much worse. I cannot in good principle support Barletta precisely because I believe he took the easy way out when his community needed him the most. Let me make this absolutely clear - virtually any other GOP (or preferably a viable 3rd party) candidate other than Lou Barletta would have me at least on the fence in this election. Replacing disappointing representatives is what we agree on but I just can't go along with replacing one with a man I believe is a Right-Wing xenophobic self-promoter. As for J.W.'s comment - sorry to disappoint you but I'm not on the take, I'm just doing what I believe is right. I can respect honest disagreements in good faith, but not baseless insinuations.
