Police: Man assaulted pregnant woman

WEST HAZLETON - A man was arrested late Tuesday night on allegations he assaulted a pregnant woman.

Jose Avila, 41, of West Clay Avenue, West Hazleton, and Philadelphia, was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment. He was arraigned by District Judge Gerald Feissner in Freeland and jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $50,000 bail.

According to the criminal complaint:

Police allege Avila assaulted a five-month old pregnant woman, and held a knife to her throat inside a West Clay Avenue home on Oct. 8.

The woman told police, according to the complaint, that Avila pushed on her stomach and threatened to kill her if she attempted to leave.

A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 13 in Central Court.
