Coughlin soccer prevails over Mountaineers in 11-goal contest

PLAINS TWP. — Tim Long’s goal with 5:18 left to play proved to be the game winner in Coughlin’s wild 6-5 win over Dallas in Wyoming Valley Conference boys soccer play on Wednesday.

The two teams were tied 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 before Brian Suchoski (2 goals, 2 assists) and Long connected late in the game to put the Crusaders up 6-4. Dallas’ Eric Cannon (goal, 2 assists) scored in the final minute, but the Mountaineers couldn’t tie things for up a fourth time.

Ryan Thomas capped off a five-goal burst in the opening 20 minutes of the second half, picking up the game-winner for the Hawkeyes.

Thomas and Austin Bogart both finished with a goal and an assist, while Dan Tomko made 18 saves for the win.

Chris Scatena scored twice for the Warriors.

GAR 3, Coughlin 2

Cassie Drojakowski had 13 kills and 19 digs as GAR won the fifth game 15-12.

The Grenadiers also won the second and third games 25-10, 25-20. Corinne Zaleski added 12 kills and 12 points. Kellie Wekel had 15 points and 27 assists.

Brittany Hess had 18 points, 53 digs and five kills for Coughlin, which won games by scores of 25-20 and 25-14. Sarah Martin had 59 digs, six kills and two blocks. Jessica Cleary added 49 digs, seven points and five kills.

Hazleton Area 3, MMI Prep 0

The Cougars were challenged closely in each game but still pulled out the 25-22, 26-24, 25-19 sweep.

Jenny Wizeman (16 kills, 6 blk, 10 digs), Michelle Vowler (20 digs), Alana Rizzo (8 kills, 7 digs, 15 pts) and Lindsey Baranko (47 assists) all had solid performances in the win.

BOYS GOLF

Berwick 185, Lake-Lehman 199

Zach Swisher (44), Dustin Arner (45), Travis Moyer (47) and Zach Eyer (49) all scored to lead the Bulldogs at par-36 Berwick Golf Course.

For Lake-Lehman, Jonathan Thomas (43), Jeff Heath (50), Tom Abdatauno (52) and Art Lockard (54) were in the top four.

Pittston Area 162, GAR 231

Brandon Matthews and Keanu Sorbelli were co-medalists, each shooting a 38 for the Patriots at Fox Hill Country Club. Marco Daniels (42) and Josh Horton (44) rounded things out for Pittston Area.

Anthony Mendoza (50), Phillip Richards (57) Bryan Carey (57) and William Pickett (67) scored for GAR.

Tunkhannock 156, Hanover Area 195

Dakota Brown’s 2-under 33 led all golfers at Wyoming Valley Country Club. Cody Bevan (39), Adam Charles (40) and Justin Brown (44) also scored for the Tigers.

For the Hawkeyes, Ricky Baron (46), Mike Szklanny (48) and Mark Washickanin (49) were the top three, while Rob Kost and Paul Holmgren both shot a 52.

Wyoming Seminary 164, Hazleton Area 169

Mike Hirthler (38), Will Bevevino (41), John Henry (42) and Nick Strzeletz (43) gave the Blue Knights the win at par-36 Sugar Loaf Golf Club.

Matt Weckesser (40), James Van Horn (42), Jared Piskorick (43) and Scott Dobash (44) led the Cougars.

Dallas 173, Nanticoke 205

Andrew McCabe (41), Austin Smith (43) and Scott Skammer (44) topped the Mountaineers at par-36 Edgewood.

Nanticoke’s Jared Kmietowicz (47), Chris Buchanan (51), John Urbanski (52), and Blake Brown (55) all scored.

It was Coughlin’s second win of the week after dispatching Wyoming Area 4-1 on Monday.

Tunkhannock earns sweep

Running on their home course, the Tigers earned wins over Pittston Area (19-40), Wyoming Area (24-33) and GAR (15-50). Tunkhannock’s Reece Ayers finished first overall with a time of 15:45.

Lake-Lehman went 2-1 by beating Pittston Area (28-29) and GAR (15-50). Wyoming Area topped Lehman for a 1-1 split.

The Black Knights defeated Pittston Area (21-34) and Wyoming Area (23-38) while picking up a 15-50 win over GAR by default.

Tunkhannock finished 2-1 on the day, falling to the Patriots, who went 1-1. Wyoming Area was 0-2.

Misericordia inducts four

Former Nanticoke and Misericordia softball pitcher Cindy (Hughes) Seery is one of four athletes to be inducted into the Cougars Hall of Fame on Sept. 27.

Seery who twice led the nation in strikeouts will joing Todd Bardua, Kirsten (Myers) Ford, and Robert Tugend in the class.

Debbie Wychock and Candice Russ scored two goals each to power King’s to victory.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Royals broke a scoreless tie at the half, picking up three late goals to win while holding Wilkes to five total shots.

Moravian 5, King’s 1

Sara Ciarlo made seven saves against a constant attack from Moravian. The Lady Monarchs’ score came on an own goal before halftime.

Misericordia 1, Marywood 0

Kelly Bergin scored the game’s only goal and Jemila Najjar-Keith earned the shutout, making three key saves in the final minutes.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

King’s 9, Albright 0

Jillian Tallarico, Rachel Hoffnagle, Lauren Breen, Maria Cometa, and Jennifer Bader were all winners in singles and doubles for King’s.

BASEBALL

LCCC 11, Lehigh/Carbon C.C. 4

John Clemens scattered seven hits over seven shutout innings as LCCC opened up their defense of the EPCC Championship with an 11-4 win.

Brad Jenkins hit two home runs while driving in six, and Rich Cosgrove added a home run for LCCC.
