Relay victory lifts Dallas over Hazleton

DALLAS – The 400 free relay team of Caitlyn Barry, McKenzie Kelley, Erin Fallon and Stacey Stepniak won the final event to give Dallas a 97-89 victory over Hazleton Area in Wyoming Valley Conference girls swimming Wednesday.

The meet was tied 70-70 with three events remaining. Shaina Grego won the 100 backstroke and Gillian Malloy won the 100 breaststroke for Hazleton Area, but Dallas captured the runner-up spots to take an 87-85 lead into the final race.

Stepniak also won the 50 and 100 freestyles. Bria Edwards had wins in the 200 and 500 freestyles for Hazleton Area.

Hanover Area 133, Lake-Lehman 46

Three Hanover Area swimmers posted four wins each as the Hawkeyes defeated Lake-Lehman.

Elizabeth Clements (100 fly, 100 back), Kathryn Gavlick (200 IM, 100 breast) and Jackie Witko (200 and 50 free) won two individual events each and also swam on two winning relay teams.

Hanover Area won all 12 events and had eight runner-up finishes.

Scranton Prep 108, Delaware Valley 75

Megan Jones and Brigitte Germain were double winnesr for Prep.

Jones won the 50 and 100 freestyle events. DelVal’s Kendall Glaster was second to Jones in the 50 free, but her time was good enough to set a school record.

Germain won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle races.

BOYS SWIMMING

Hanover Area 86, Lake-Lehman 55

Ryan Thomas (diving, 100 fly) and Darian McGovern (200 IM, 100 back) won two individual events apiece for Hanover Area.

Both Hawkeyes also picked up two wins in relay events.

Tom Herrick won the 500 freestyle for Lehman’s only victory.

Delaware Valley 111, Scranton Prep 25

Delaware Valley set numerous pool and team records in a victory over a three-man Prep squad.

Ken Kleso set pool and team records in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Jamie Grennan set pool records in the 50 and 100 free events. The 200 free relay team set a pool record, while the 200 medley unit set a pool and team record.

Hazleton Area 109, Dallas 77

Tim Borneisen (200 free, 100 fly) and Grant Rowlands (50 free, 100 free) won two individual events each to help Hazleton Area to a victory.

Fred Macosky (500 free) and Danny Fasulka (100 back) posted Dallas’ only wins.
