The Luzerne County Coroner’s Office and Hanover Township Police are seeking assistance with identification of a body discovered Sunday afternoon.

The deceased male was discovered inside the entrance of an abandoned mine tunnel on the grounds of the Old Loomis Colliery, which is located off of the Sans Souci highway, the coroner’s office said.

The man may have been in his 50s or 60s, officials said.

Evidence at the scene indicated that the deceased had been at this location for an extended period of time and perhaps had been a homeless individual seeking shelter from the cold.

There is no suspicion of foul play, but evidence indicates that others might have been present at or about the time of the individual’s death from natural causes, , the coroner’s office said.

There are no identifying scars or tattoos however it is believed that the deceased had undergone substantial weight loss prior to his death. Positive identification will be possible with the use of dental records or DNA testing.

the coroner’s office asks that any person or agency with specific information that may help with identification contact their office at 570-825-1664.
