Swoyersville adopts new codes

SWOYERSVILLE – Council on Monday adopted the residential portion of the International Building Code Amendment that deals with plumbing and electrical systems.

Building inspections will be provided by Building Inspectors Underwriters, an established firm that has provided multifaceted inspections for municipalities in surrounding states that include New Jersey and New York, as well as other localities in Pennsylvania.

Zoning director Joe Ruscavage said the former building inspector retired and he expected BIU would provide the most up-to-date building code expertise.

Ruscavage denied there would be any changes to requirements for building new homes as a result of adoption of the amendment.

In other business, the council granted permission to Pennsylvania American Water Co. to replace a Main Street water main between Slocum and Owen streets. The utility promised to resurface the street completely from one side to the other, if the borough waived “pave cut” permit fees. Council agreed.

The state Office of Community Development reduced the amount of a block grant approved in November. Originally the block grant was authorized for $110,000, but due to budget constraints, the allotment was whittled to $100,000.

The block grant must be used on streets on which the income level of the residents falls below a certain level.
