FAIRVIEW TWP. — A fire gutted a home in the 100 block of Spruce Street in Fairview Township early Saturday morning, prompting multiple fire companies to respond. The residents were not home at the time and no one was injured.
Fire companies were called to the scene around 7 a.m. when temperatures still hovered well below freezing, creating treacherous conditions on the sloped road outside the home. A Fairview Township truck was brought in to salt the road. Firefighters in the front lines of the battle often emerged from the building with small icicles forming on their helmet rims and frost on their jackets.
The fire was largely contained by 8 a.m. with much of the work apparently focusing on tracking down any potential flames lurking in the second floor ceiling. As fire fighters pulled down ceiling material, gushes of water trapped above would cascade out.
Crews called out included the Mountain Top Hose Company and departments from Ashley borough and the townships of Hanover, Wright and Dorrance.
