The following are recent Lackawanna County restaurant inspection reports from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. According the agency: “any inspection is a ‘snapshot’ of the day and time of the inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment. Also, at the time of the inspection violations are recorded but are often corrected on site prior to the inspector leaving the establishment.” The information is taken from the inspection database at www.eatsafepa.com. Domino’s Pizza, 1578 Main St., Peckville, Aug. 1. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Food ingredient storage containers, in the prep area, are not labeled with the common name of the food. Food contact surface of spatula is not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Person in charge disposed spatula for corrective actions.

Family Dollar #8093, 1437 Main St., Ste. 2, Peckville, PA, Aug. 1. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violation: 9 half gallons of whole milk was offered for retail sale past expired sell by date of 07/31/17. Expired Milk was removed from sale.

Violations: Food employees observed in prep area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets or hats. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Soap dispenser empty at the hand-wash sink in the prep area. Observed paint flaking from ceiling in walk-in freezer.

Terry’s Diner, 4118 Birney Ave. Moosic, Aug. 2. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Excessive ice buildup on the condenser unit in the walk-in freezer. Loose or broken door hinges observed on walk -in freezer. Microwave observed with old food residue and splash on interior ceiling. Cleaned on site for corrective action. Observed equipment, in kitchen area, with an accumulation of dust, old food residue, debris on non-food contact surfaces. Fan guards in walk in cooler have buildup of dust. Food employee observed towel drying utensils and food equipment after cleaning. Floor under hot/cold line equipment has a buildup of grease, old food residue and in need of cleaning.

Citgo, 313 Northern Blvd., Chinchilla, Aug. 2. Follow-up inspection; in compliance.

Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, 100 Viewmont Mall, Scranton, Aug. 2. Follow-up inspection; in compliance. Violation: A few flies observed in the food preparation area. The owner has implemented a pest control program to eliminate fruit flies.

Domenick’s Pizza, 618 Washington Ave., Jermyn, Aug. 3. Complaint inspection; in compliance. Violations: An insect control device located in dry storage area with potential to contaminate food. The device was relocated during this inspection. Door to the outside, located in the front area of the food facility is being propped open. There were no insects or flies in the facility at the time of this inspection. The door in the back area of the facility where majority of food preparation is done has a screen door. Webbing observed in the back storage area near the door. The webbing was removed during this inspection.

Jessup Plaza Beverage Center, 1019 Constitution Ave., Jessup, Aug. 3. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready-to-eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the refrigerator, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Working containers in kitchen area, used for storing chemicals, taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Microwave, a food contact surface, was observed to have old food residue and was not clean to sight and touch.

King’s Wok Chinese Restaurant, 1437 Main St., Peckville, Aug. 3. Follow-up inspection; in compliance.

Mary Lou’s Pizza, 209 Dunn Ave., Old Forge, Aug. 3. Regular inspection; in compliance.

New Sun Gourmet, 100 Viewmont Mall, Dickson City, Aug. 3. Regular inspection; out of compliance. Violations: Working containers in front counter area, used for storing chemicals taken from bulk supplies, were mislabeled. The containers were labeled sanitizer but the contents were a cleaner. The containers were emptied and re-labeled during this inspection. The person in charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by the repeat violations. Observed a plastic container of scallions being stored in the ice that is used for customer drinks. The container was removed during this inspection. Common bowls observed in bulk food ingredients. Bowls were removed during this inspection. Observed an open container of rice stored under the hand-wash sink, where it is subject to splash from the sink. The rice was moved during this inspection. Observed cardboard boxes of chicken and produce stored directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Observed food being cooled at room temperature in containers with tight fitting lids, which is not a proper cooling method. Owner was instructed on proper methods for cooling. Drip edges of hoods have an accumulation of grease. Food facility is reusing plastic grocery bags and cardboard boxes, which are intended to be single-use articles. Shelves in the walk-in cooler have an accumulation of old food residue and are in need of cleaning. The top area of the bain marie unit where the lid sets has an accumulation of old food residue and is in need of cleaning. Floors underneath cooking and ware wash equipment have an accumulation of dirt and debris

Summit Market & Deli, 800 Morgan Hwy., South Abington Township, Aug. 3. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Observed chicken being cooled in large layers on a sheet tray. Employee instructed to place chicken in single layers for quicker cooling during this inspection. Food was held at 50 degrees F, in the prep cooler in the back area, rather than 41 degrees F or below as required. Food was moved to the walk-in cooler after determining that it was out of temperature less than 4 hours. Pre-packaged baked goods made by Sandy’s Table (18505) and Royal Bakery (18643) are not labeled properly with an ingredient statement, net weight, distributed by statement. Archbald Express Mart, 377 Main St., Archbald, Aug. 8. Regular inspection; out of compliance. Violations: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. The food facility is not using an approved detergent-sanitizer in both compartments of the two compartment ware-wash sink. Non-food contact surfaces of cabinet not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of debris and webbing buildup.

Kobe, 808 Scranton/Carbondale Hwy., Dickson City, Aug. 8. Regular inspection; out of compliance. Violations: The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. An open employee’s beverage container was observed in sushi area, a food preparation area. The beverage was removed during this inspection. Food (fruits and vegetables) observed in the walk-in cooler area, spoiled and moldy. All items were voluntarily discarded during this inspection. Observed cardboard boxes of food stored directly on the floor in the walk-in freezer area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. The boxes were moved during this inspection. Shrimp observed thawing at room temperature in a bowl in the ware-wash sink, which is not an approved thawing method. Reviewed proper thawing methods with the person in charge. A photo was taken to document non-compliance. Beef, scallops, shrimp, Lo Mein noodles, tofu, eggs were held at 60-61 degrees F, in the walk-in refrigerator area, rather than 41 degrees F or below as required. The person in charge was instructed to discard ice and clean and sanitize machine prior to use. A photo was taken to document non-compliance. Clean dish racks observed stored on the floor in ware-wash area. Employee observed rinsing bowls at the sushi prep hand-wash sink. Employees instructed to use hand-wash sinks for hand washing only during this inspection. Paper towel dispenser empty at the hand-wash sinks in the sushi prep and kitchen areas.
