UPDATE: The bridge reopened to traffic just after 5 p.m.

WILKES-BARRE — The Market Street Bridge was closed to traffic today for flood gate testing.

The Luzerne County Flood Protection Authority said periodic drills and trial installations of flood closures are required by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The authority will perform a full installation of the Market Street closure structure on the Kingston side. Meanwhile, gate posts on the Wilkes-Barre side also will be inserted in roadway holes to ensure they fit securely, the authority said.

Employees for the Luzerne County Flood Protection Authority closed the Market Street Bridge on Wednesday to install flood walls on the Kingston side of the span across the Susquehanna River. The last time the walls were installed was in 2011. Since then there are new employees and the practice installation prepares them for an actual event.
