HAZLETON —Two men were arrested Saturday and charged with carrying handguns without a licence.

Police say they later discovered the guns were stolen.

According to a news release from the Hazleton Police Department:

Police responded to two incidents Saturday regarding illegally possessed handguns. After receiving a report of a shooting in the area of Station 33 Nightclub on East Diamond Avenue at 5:35 a.m., officers located a vehicle that contained bullet holes. Milton Montero, 25, was one of the people in the vehicle and a stolen 380 ACP handgun was found in his possession.

In the other incident that occurred shortly after 11 p.m., police responded to a report of a person with a handgun in the 200 block of East Diamond Avenue. After arriving on scene, officers noticed a vehicle that fit the description of the vehicle that was seen in the early morning shooting. Officers stopped the vehicle and encountered Danny Vargas, 20, who was one of the people inside.

They observed handgun ammunition “in clear view” in Vargas’ jacket pocket and a stolen handgun was located under the seat that he was sitting in. Both Vargas and Montero were charged with firearms not to be carried without a license and receiving stolen property.

They were arraigned by the district court judge in Shickshinny and taken to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility with bail set at $25,000 for each.

The city police department is still investigating these two incidents. Anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling 911.
