BERWICK — Police and the U.S. Marshals apprehended a man wanted for violating parole and allegedly discovered illegal drugs and firearms inside his residence on Thursday.

Police said Charles Townsend, 36, was located at 1611 W. Front St. where a loaded handgun, crystal methamphetamine, heroin, prescription medications, marijuana, drug packaging materials and cash were allegedly discovered.

Police said the serial number was altered on the handgun.

While officers were collecting evidence, three juveniles knocked on the door and were surprised to encounter police. Police said the juveniles were at the residence to buy marijuana.

The juveniles were released to their parents.

Police said Townsend was wanted by the state Department of Parole. He was on parole on murder and robbery convictions, police said.

Townsend was charged with three counts each of possession of a controlled substance, endangering the welfare of children and corruption of minors and one count each with illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, flight to avoid apprehension and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He was jailed at the Columbia County Prison for lack of $250,000 bail.

Margaret Walter, 31, who resided with Townsend, was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, and one count each of possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, hindering apprehension and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. She was jailed at the Columbia County Prison for lack of $50,000 bail.
