83 septic tanks need to be pumped in Nuangola

Legal action may result if tanks still not pumped by April 1, official says.

NUANGOLA – Borough officials were advised Tuesday that 83 property owners had still not pumped septic tanks as of the end of the year, and legal action could follow if steps were not taken by April 1.

The borough will warn the property owners using attachments to garbage fee and tax advisories, but if steps were not taken the borough would take non-payees to district court, councilman Anthony DeLuca noted.

Residents could contact the borough for exemptions, on the grounds of no running water or an empty property, he said.

Residents were also advised that effective January 16, the borough had arranged for both advanced and basic life support vehicles from Mountain Top and Hanover Twp to be listed with county 911 as first responders. The borough had found instances where response vehicles had been limited in what they were carrying, and the change should ensure that any situation is met, council noted.

Concerns about the abuse of the cardboard recycling program could result in it being discontinued in March when the hauler changes, council members noted.

The addition of non-corrugated cardboard was creating an added expense for the borough, at the same time as the revenue generated by the corrugated cardboard was falling. Residents were dumping cereal boxes and other material that the borough had to separate out, to the extent that continuation of the service was being bought into question.

Council agreed it would decide on the matter at the end of the current contract.

Council was also advised that 50 residents had refused or failed to respond to requests from the sewer authority to establish locations for sewer laterals and grinder pumps. Council noted some of those named were duplications, but noted the Rice Elementary School sewer use numbers would still need to be calculated into the planned system.

Residents could contact the borough for exemptions, on the grounds of no running water or an empty property, says councilman.
