911 project comes to Laurel Run

Borough says GeoComm’s work will begin in July to check addresses, locations.

LAUREL RUN – Borough officials were advised Thursday that 911 is coming to town.

Or, more accurately, as in eight other county municipalities, the firm GeoComm is coming to check street addresses and GPS locations in order to build an effective map for the county’s 911 emergency dispatch center.

According to GeoComm representative Kathy Liljequist, the work will begin in July and fill in the gaps on addresses to ensure that there are no confusing locations or properties still listed as rural route delivery addresses.

Most residents should have no contact with the GeoComm workers, but in cases in which an address is not visible, or is confusing, then the workers will make contact with the resident, she said.

Council will be providing more information to residents about the project early next month.

In other business, Mayor Daniel Gildea noted he had received a notification from the Bureau of Forestry within the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources that the borough could be eligible for the state’s Fire Wise program because of the scope of the May forest fire.

The program could aid the community in developing projects that could ameliorate the problems and improve the odds of survival, and grant funding for some of the projects could be available, according to DCNR.

Gildea also complimented the council on its work in holding an event to thank the state and local firefighters who had fought that fire over several days. He said the firefighters had been surprised and grateful that their efforts had been recognized.

He also noted, in regard to the annual fundraiser for the fire department, that help was needed for the annual Giant’s Despair Hill Climb event, set for July 11 and 12.

Because no county correctional facility prisoners will be available to help with cleaning up the route this year, volunteers will be needed in the week leading up to the event, he said.
