Airport board votes to ask feds to identify contractors in indictment

AVOCA – Members of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport board voted this morning to direct solicitors from Luzerne and Lackawanna County to contact federal authorities about revealing the identity of the contractors who allegedly paid kickbacks to a former board member.

The board, including indicted Lackawanna County commissioner A.J. Munchak, voted unanimously to approve the motion.

Munchak and former Lackawanna County Commissioner Robert Cordaro were charged Tuesday with accepting thousands of dollars from various businesses who had contracts with the county. One of those contracts also dealt with work performed at the airport.

Munchak maintains he is innocent and has refused to resign as a commissioner or from the airport board.

Luzerne County Commissioner Maryanne Petrilla, who sits on the board with fellow commissioners from Luzerne and Lackawanna counties, said she also wants to know if the cost of any contracts involved were increased based on the kickbacks allegedly paid. If there was a cost increase, she said she wants to seek reimbursement from the contractor involved.
