Benton man killed after Jeep crashes Police Blotter

FAIRMOUNT TWP. – A Benton man died after state police say he failed to negotiate a left curve on Volansky Road, near Birth Road, where his Jeep traveled off the roadway and crashed into an embankment late Friday morning.

John G. Muntz, Jr., was pronounced dead at about 11:10 a.m. by Luzerne County Deputy Coroner Clarke Piatt, according to state police at the Shickshinny barracks. Muntz was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

After impacting the embankment, Muntz’s 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo came back down the north berm of the roadway before the Jeep spun counterclockwise flipping onto its passenger side, police said.

Muntz was ejected through the passenger side window, police said. The Jeep then landed on top of him and continued sliding on its passenger side, coming to rest in the center of the roadway.

WILKES-BARRE – City police reported the following:

Two females reportedly fled Burlington Coat Factory, 47 Spring St., after police say they removed security tabs from shoes and clothing on Wednesday. They fled in a white Buick, Pennsylvania registration GWR 4584. The incident is under investigation.

Andrew Armijo, of Wilkes-Barre, reported while he was walking home he was approached by a male asking for the time on the 700 block of Scott Street at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

The male then told him to “run his pockets,” but Armijo refused, according to police. The male then struck the victim in the face, but he fought back and the male suspect then fled on foot with two other males wearing a gray hoody and a white hoody.
