Body found near park

Discovery is made near Kirby Park and the Black Diamond bridge. Autopsy is today.

EDWARDSVILLE – Authorities are investigating a suspicious death after a body was found Thursday night in a wooded area close to the Susquehanna River near Kirby Park .

A 25-year-old person was pronounced dead at about 8:25 p.m. by Luzerne County Coroner John Corcoran. The manner and cause of death could not be released, he said. Corcoran wouldn’t reveal the gender.

An autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon, he said.

“We can’t tell you a lot because it is currently under investigation,” Corcoran said. “It’s a very active investigation.”

It was just before 9:30 p.m. when coroner’s office officials brought out the body by a four-wheeler into the back of a van near the Black Diamond Bridge

The body was discovered around 7 p.m. in a remote area about 500 feet down the railroad track from where a yellow police line was put up along a pathway between Kirby Park and Gateway Apartments.

A train that was heading down the tracks was halted as police continued their investigation. An emergency worker arrived on a four-wheeler carrying lights to aid in the recovery.

The county District Attorney’s Office, state police at Wyoming, Edwardsville police and Wilkes-Barre police were all investigating.
