Business administrator Michael Revitt said Benco Dental’s move to one of the Mericle industrial parks near Pittston and Jenkins townships would cost Wilkes-Barre Township a significant percentage of the mercantile tax and at least $26,000 in employee-paid emergency services taxes.
With the likely decline in retail sales from stores in the township, it was not likely to see the revenue from previous years, he said.
Some council members had asked whether an increase in the sewer fees would be needed because the township had accrued a $1 million financial reserve, but Revitt said the township faced a $350,000 debt repayment for the current sewer system each year for the next 15 years, and the current sewer fee barely covered those costs.
“We didn’t break the sewer fund, but we do have to fix it,” he said.
