Jay Harvey, of Trucksville, is the interim Upper School dean. He oversees all aspects of the school’s academic and student life programs, college guidance program, registrar and faculty. A 1980 Sem graduate, he holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Penn State University and a master’s degree in education from Wilkes University.

Robert Tarud, CPA, is the business manager for both the Lower and Upper Schools. He oversees business operations, human resources and purchasing. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from King’s College and an MBA in finance and accounting from Wilkes University.

GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER

Tom Sokola, of Hanover Township, was recently named chief administrative officer for the Danville center. He is responsible for the center’s operations and its surrounding hospital-based community practice sites. Sokola has been with Geisinger for nearly 30 years and is a board member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association of Northeastern PA.

Kristen Yurkavage, a senior consultant in the Wilkes-Barre firm’s Corporate Governance Risk Management Practice, has successfully passed the Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager examination. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minor in finance from King’s College and is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

MISERICORDIA UNIVERSITY

The Dallas school recently welcomed 12 new full-time faculty members for the 2010-11 academic year.

Amanda Caleb, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of English. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Davidson College and a master’s degree in 19th century studies and doctorate degree in English literature from the University of Sheffield.

Francis P. Kelly, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of physics. He holds both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in physics from Lehigh University and both master’s and doctorate degrees in materials science and engineering from the University of Florida.

Amanda Van Lanen, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of history. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Southern Adventist University and both master’s and doctorate degrees in U.S. and public history from Washington State University.

Gina Capitano, M.S., is an assistant professor of medical imaging. She holds a bachelor’s degree in radiography and a master’s degree in educational strategies from Misericordia University.

Lori Cimino, M.S., is an assistant professor of speech-language pathology. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communication disorders from Marywood University and a master’s degree in speech pathology from Bloomsburg University.

Dawn Evans, M.S., is an assistant professor of occupational therapy. She holds a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy and a master’s degree in organizational management from Misericordia.

Kingsley Banya, Ph.D., is a professor of teacher education and chair of teacher education. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history and social studies from the University of Sierra Leone, a master’s degree in curriculum from Queen’s University, a master’s degree in comparative and international education from the University of London, and a doctorate degree in curriculum theory from the University of Toronto.

Kelly Filipkowski, M.S., is an assistant professor of psychology. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the State University of New York at Oswego and master’s degrees in sports psychology and social psychology from Florida State University and Syracuse University.

Joan Foster is an assistant professor of business. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Misericordia, an MBA from Wilkes University and a master’s degree in educational technology from Lehigh University.

David Gargone is an assistant professor of business. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Scranton, a master’s degree in secondary education from Rockford College and is a doctoral candidate in sports management from the United States Sports Academy.

Timothy Kearney, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of business. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Polish language and culture and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds a doctorate degree in economics from the City University of New York.

Margaret Ann Rapp, Ph.D., is an associate professor and chair of the department of social work. She holds a bachelor’s degree from The College of Insurance, a master’s degree in social work from Adelphi University and a doctorate degree in clinical social work from New York University.

HONORS & AWARDS

Elva Valentine , owner of Valentine’s Fine Jewelry, Dallas, was recently honored with an 18 karat gold and diamond pin to commemorate 25 years of membership in the Independent Jewelers Organization.
