Crews battle brush fires

Fire crews spent hours battling several brush fires that broke out this afternoon in areas surrounding Wilkes-Barre.

Firefighters were dispatched around 1:15 p.m. to a fire burning near Jumper Road in Plains Township. Crews responded less than an hour later to a wildfire in one part of Laurel Run and off Route 315 in Jenkins Township, a Luzerne County 911 supervisor said.

Additional woods fires were reported around 3 p.m. on Lower Lehigh Street, Fairview Township and around 5:20 p.m. in the 900 block of West Main Street, Plymouth Township.

Multiple units were still working on putting out flames as of 6:30 p.m.

State Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry officials remained at the scene.

Today's brush fires come just one week after flames broke out in wooded areas stretching from Laurel Run to Bear Creek Township and in one part of Exeter Township.
