Firefighters battle brush fires

Several brush fires were reported in wooded areas stretching from Laurel Run to Bear Creek Township just after 2 p.m. Saturday, a Luzerne County 911 supervisor said.

Three planes were dropping water with a chemical retardant over the fires. Plains Township Fire Capt. Mark Ritsick said his department patrolled the border of the township and Laurel Run along Route 115 to check for flying embers or debris. State Department of Conversation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry was at the scene.

No buildings were threatened and no evacuations were made as of Saturday night. Firefighters were still at the scene.
