GOP leader Boehner of Ohio aids Hackett

House Minority Leader will be at congressional hopeful’s fundraiser in Back Mountain.

U.S. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, will be in the Back Mountain today to attend a barbecue that is doubling as a fundraiser for congressional candidate Chris Hackett.

The invitation-only event will be held at a Hackett supporter’s home, according to Hackett for Congress campaign manager Mark Harris. Harris did not identify the supporter.

Tickets for the barbecue cost $50 and a roundtable discussion with Boehner will cost guests $1,250 each. Harris declined to say how many people are expected at the event.

Hackett, a Kingston Township businessman, faces freshman U.S. Rep. Chris Carney, D-Dimock Township, in the general election for the 10th District seat.

Hackett has been aided by high-profile Washington politicians since defeating Dan Meuser in the Republican primary election in April.

When Republican presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John McCain held a town hall meeting at the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre on July 23, Hackett was tapped to serve as master of ceremonies. He and seven other congressional hopefuls were invited by GOP Whip Roy Blount, of Missouri, and the National Republican Congressional Committee to attend a July 16 fundraiser in Washington.

Last Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., appeared with Hackett at a press conference at Calex Logistics in Yatesville, where the two touted their support of increased domestic oil production. Then the two attended a fundraiser for Hackett in Lackawaxen, Pike County.

More fundraisers are on tap with a visit by U.S. Rep. Tom Price of Georgia planned for September.

Hackett’s second-quarter financial statements filed July 31 show he had a slightly better three months than Carney -- $367,000 to $353,000. But Carney had a huge cash-on-hand advantage with $1,149,938 to Hackett’s $266,816.
