DUNMORE -- Travelers can take a coffee break over the Thanksgiving holiday at rest areas in Northeastern Pennsylvania. In some rest areas, the coffee will be available on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at various time periods. The free coffee won’t be offered on Thanksgiving Day.
Community groups will participate by serving free coffee at rest areas along interstates 80 and 81. The program, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, is to encourage drivers to take a break for safety’s sake during the busy holiday weekend. Coffee breaks will be conducted at these rest areas:
•Interstate 80 eastbound at White Haven between the Mountain Top/ Hazleton exit 262 and the White Haven/ Freeland Exit 273. Boy Scout Troop 207 will host the free coffee on Wednesday and Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday. The Scouts plan to man the booth 24 hours each day.
•Interstate 81 northbound at Dorrance, Luzerne County, between the Dorrance exit 155 and the Nuangola exit 159. The Hazleton Blind Association will host the free coffee service on Wednesday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the Collie Club NEPA will do the honors on Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
•Interstate 81 southbound at Nuangola between the Nuangola exit 159 and the Dorrance exit 155. Boy Scout Troop 207 will be there on Wednesday and Friday for 24 hours each day, while members of the Civil Air Patrol will be there on Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
•Interstate 81 northbound at Tompkinsville, Lackawanna County, between the Fleetville/ Tompkinsville Exit 202 and the Glenwood/ Lenoxville Exit 206. The Abington Lions Club will host the service on Wednesday and Friday, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Summit Christian Academy will be serving up free coffee on Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
•Interstate 81 southbound at Lenox, Susquehanna County, between the Lenox exit 211 and the Glenwood/ Lenoxville exit 206. Regional Search and Rescue will provide coffee on Wednesday and Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to noon each day.
•Welcome Center, I-81 southbound at Great Bend, Susquehanna County, between the New York State line and the Great Bend exit 230. The Helene Yelverton Dance Studio will serve free coffee on Wednesday and Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day
