Hazleton man dies in 2-vehicle crash

HAZLE TWP. -- State police at Hazleton said 43-year-old Carlos Rosario died as a result of a two-vehicle crash at state Route 309 and 28th Street on Wednesday morning.

Rosario, of Hazleton, was pronounced dead on scene by Luzerne County Deputy Coroner Andrew Piskel, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Lisman.

Police said Elizabeth Shaffer, of Ebervale, driving a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer, was attempting to turn onto 28th Street from Route 309 and pulled into the path of a 1982 Kawasaki operated by Rosario at about 7 a.m.

Rosario was wearing a helmet, according to police.

Shaffer was transported to Hazleton General Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

It was not known if charges were filed against Shaffer as of press time.
