JACKSON TWP. – Two Kingston Township police officers were injured early Saturday morning when they were struck by a hit-and-run driver while walking along a rural lane in Jackson Township .
Robert J. Verosky III of Harveys Lake hit the officers as he drove a sports utility vehicle in front of Farmers Inn on Hillside Road about 12:15 a.m. Saturday, according to a press release from Jackson Township Police Department.
Verosky tried to flee the scene before being detained about a mile north of the crash site, the release said..
Officers Charles Rauschkolb and Wade Curtis were assisting Jackson Township police investigate a report that a man had fallen into a creek along Hillside Road, said Kingston Township Police Chief James Balavage.
Both patrolmen got out of their police cruisers and were walking on the berm of the road while shining their flashlights toward the creek, the police chief said.
“As they were walking to another area (off the roadway), a motorist came by and struck Officer Rauschkolb,” Balavage said.
The impact forced Rauschkolb into Curtis, Balavage said, and both of them fell onto the pavement. The officers were transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, and later released.
Balavage said the person who had alerted officers had given a false report. Fire departments also searched the creek.
The investigation continues and several charges are expected to be filed against Verosky, according to the news release.
