LCTA is planning bus route to serve Shickshinny area

HUNLOCK TWP. -- Residents of Shickshinny, Hunlock Township and other nearby municipalities may be able to ride mass transit buses as soon as September, Luzerne County Transportation Authority officials said Monday night.

Robb Henderson, operations supervisor from LCTA, said riders can get to most parts of northern Luzerne County for about $4 per day round trip. Anyone over the age of 65 will be able to ride at no charge, he said at a special meeting at the Hunlock Township municipal building.

The LCTA was prompted to add the new route when it received 94 signed requests from residents in that part of Luzerne County, Henderson said.

The bus service will be a “real plus,” said Bill Pollock, chairman of the township supervisors. He expects many residents will use the buses once they know the details.

Henderson said the route is now in the planning stages. He anticipates the buses stopping somewhere in Hunlock Township and then proceeding down to Shickshinny. The return trip from Shickshinny will probably be a straight shot to Public Square in Wilkes-Barre, he said.

He expects the buses to arrive around 7 a.m. and again around 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The times are flexible, Henderson said.

Depending on demand, there may be more than two runs and also weekend service, he added.

To determine routes and times, the LCTA circulated questionnaires to garner feedback. They are available at the Hunlock Township municipal building and several businesses in Shickshinny, said Pollock. Questionnaires can also be obtained by contacting the LCTA at 288-9356.

Residents are asked the purpose of their trips and what times they want the buses to arrive.

Supervisor Ron Hines said the township will consider starting a park-and-ride at the fire hall. Other park-and-ride locations near Shickshinny were also discussed.
