AVOCA – The regular monthly meeting of Avoca Borough Council will be held on Thursday , in the municipal building, immediately following the 6:30 p.m. work session. The public is invited to attend.
EXETER – Recently mailed county/municipal tax bills that do not include the homestead deduction are not valid bills. New county/municipal bills will be mailed shortly and will include the homestead deduction.
These newer bills should be used to pay this tax. All payments previously sent will be returned.
Homeowners with escrow accounts should contact their mortgage company and inform them of the situation and tell them a new bill will be issued.
Tax collection will resume when new bills are received by property owners.
NEWPORT TWP. – The Glen Lyon Crime Watch will meet on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Italian American Sporting Club. New members are welcome.
HUGHESTOWN – The Hughestown Borough Council will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the borough building. Wayne Quick will preside. Hughestown Centennial books will also be available.
Books contain pictures of all events taking place during 1979. If interested, please call 654-2061, leave a message and someone will contact you, or call 655-6076.
JENKINS TWP. – The Luzerne County and Jenkins Township taxes for 2010 have been mailed to all property owners on record. Please note there has been a change in office hours at the Jenkins Municipal Building on Main Street, Inkerman.
New office hours will be on Monday and Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. during rebate period only at the municipal building. The rebate period expires on May 3.
Office hours also are every Tuesday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at 3 Laflin Road, Inkerman, or by special appointment by calling the tax collector at 654-9710. Payments can be mailed in at any time and are accepted with the postmark date.
A drop-off box is available at 3 Laflin Road for your convenience.
If any property owner has not received a bill or if you have received one in error, please contact the tax collector. If your tax bills are paid by your mortgage provider, please send the tax bill to them as soon as possible to insure prompt payment.
KINGSTON TWP. – The Kingston Township Board of Supervisors announced that taxpayer assistance will be provided for all residents of Kingston Township for the filing of 2009 local tax returns for Dallas School District.
A representative from Berkheimer will be available at the Township Municipal Building, 180 E. Center St., Shavertown, from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Berkheimer representative will be happy to answer any questions pertaining to local income taxes. Residents with questions may call the Township Administrative Office at 696-3809.
KINGSTON TWP. – The Kingston Township Recreation Commission has announced that the annual Easter egg hunt will be held March 27 at 1 p.m. The event will be held at the Center Street Park, across from the municipal building in Shavertown.
The children will be divided into the following three age groups for the event: up to 5 years, 6 to 8 years and 9 to 12 years.
Township recreation commission members will supervise the Easter egg hunt, which is sponsored by the Kingston Township Board of Supervisors for resident children of Kingston Township. Proof of residency is required for admission.
Rain date for the event will be April 3.

LUZERNE – A no parking sign will be posted on Buckingham Avenue restricting parking during certain business hours. Please be aware of the new parking regulation. Violators will be ticketed.
NEWPORT TWP. – Ken Angradi, Newport Township Tax Collector, has announced that the 2010 county/municipal taxes were issued on March 5. . The rebate period at 2 percent for these taxes will run until May 5.
Payments can be made at 50 Coal St., Glen Lyon. Office hours for the rebate, face and penalty periods will be Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m.
Property owners with escrow accounts should forward their bills to their financial institution for payment. Anyone not receiving a tax bill by Wednesday should contact Ken at 736-6319. All property owners are reminded when making payments by mail or in person that the entire bill must be presented if a stamped receipt is requested.
For payment by mail, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope if a receipt is requested. Shut-ins, handicapped individuals, etc., can arrange for a home collection by calling Ken.
