Lackawanna County plans tire collection

Old tires should be dropped off at collection sites, Monday through Friday.

Lackawanna County Commissioners Michael J. Washo, Corey D. O’Brien and A.J. Munchak, along with Lackawanna County Recycling and the Lackawanna County Conservation District, will hold a tire collection for county residents in celebration of Earth Week, from Monday through Saturday.

In addition to the environmental implications, Lackawanna County and its program partners decided to focus on tire collection this year because of safety concerns.

Abandoned tires are the breeding ground of choice for mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus. Last year, a positive case of West Nile Virus was reported in the county. The case vividly demonstrates the importance of responsibly removing tires from the environment. The tire collection also meshes with the county’s efforts to prevent West Nile Virus through a spraying program, and it takes the county a step forward in its commitment to clean up the environment.

Residents are encouraged to bring old tires to one of the participating sites on the scheduled collection day and time. To help offset the cost of this event, a fee of $2 per passenger tire and $5 per light truck tire will be charged. Tires must be off the rim. You must be a county resident to participate.

Collections will be held at the following locations and times:

Lackawanna County Recycling Center, 3400 Boulevard Ave., Scranton, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Saturday, April 25, 8 to 11:30 a.m.; Blakely Borough Building, 1439 Main St., Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Carbondale DPW Building, Enterprise Drive, Thursday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Clarks Summit DPW garage, 308 Davis St., Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. to noon; Dickson City DPW garage, Enterprise Drive, Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Dunmore DPW garage, 11 Peggy Parkway, Monday through Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Glenburn Township, 3110 Waterford Road, Tuesday and Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Mayfield DPW site, Friday, 2 to 7 p.m.; Roaring Brook Township maintenance complex, Elmhurst Boulevard, Thursday, 5 to 9 p.m.; Scranton DPW yard, 101 W.
