Legislation helps Coal Street Park project

State Sen. Ray Musto has amended a bill to release land restrictions allowing the 13.7 million Coal Street Park renovation project in Wilkes-Barre to proceed.

“The Coal Street Project will help with Wilkes-Barre’s revitalization - making the entire city a better place to live and work,” said Musto, D-Pittston Township. “Being able to use this land for public recreational space will make it more appealing and bring energy to the city.”

Musto amended House Bill 109, a measure that has already cleared the House of Representatives. The amendment also imposes Project 70 restrictions on two tracts of land within an approximately 33-acre park owned by the City of Wilkes-Barre.

State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Wilkes-Barre, was instrumental in getting the legislation through the House of Representatives.

“I am very appreciative of Sen. Musto and Rep. Pashinski for assisting the city to move this important legislation forward,” Leighton said. “This now allows us to change the use of some of the land in the project from vacant land to land that can be developed. Part of the land will be used for the recreational project and for the new office complex.”
