(AP) David Clarkson and Patrik Elias scored in a shootout and the New Jersey Devils rallied from a late two-goal deficit to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Thursday night, snapping a season-high six game winless streak.
Elias and Adam Henrique got the Devils to the overtime, scoring in the final 6 1/2 minutes, with Elias tying the game on a rebound with 66 seconds left in regulation.
Thomas Vanek and rookie Brian Flynn staked Buffalo to a 2-0 lead, with Vanek tallying his team-high 13th goal of the season on a second-period power play, and Flynn getting the first of his career midway through the third period.
Johan Hedberg made 23 saves and stopped both Sabres shootout attempts for New Jersey.
After Ilya Kovalchuk and Vanek missed on the first two shootout attempts, Clarkson made a nifty move to beat Ryan Miller with a backhander.
Pominville seemed to miss the net on the Sabres’ second try and Elias deked Miller out of position for a tap-in game winner.
Capitals 7, Panthers 1
WASHINGTON (AP) John Erskine, Wojtek Wolski, John Carlson and Mike Ribeiro all scored before the game was 8 minutes old, and the Capitals climbed out of a tie for last in the Eastern Conference.
Florida’s Jacob Markstrom allowed two goals on two shots and was pulled after 3 minutes, 10 seconds the fastest yanking of an NHL goalie for something other than an injury in more than a year, according to STATS LLC. Markstrom’s replacement, Scott Clemmensen, didn’t fare much better, giving up two goals in the first six shots.
Alex Ovechkin had two assists during that early run and added a power-play goal later.
Rangers 2, Islanders 1, OT
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Marian Gaborik scored a power-play goal 42 seconds into overtime. Gaborik took a feed in the high slot from Rick Nash, who got the Rangers even at 1 with 5:23 left in regulation, and fired in a shot for his eighth of the season and first in nine games.
The Rangers got their third power play of the night the only advantages for either team when Michael Del Zotto was hauled down as he crashed in on Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov 21 seconds into the extra session.
Gaborik’s goal stretched the Rangers’ winning streak to a season-high four games and ended the Islanders’ winning run at two.
Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves for the win. Nabokov stopped 35 in a tough-luck loss.
Penguins 5, Flyers 4
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Chris Kunitz scored his second goal just 18 seconds into the third period to cap a four-goal rally. Pascal Dupuis, James Neal and Tyler Kennedy also scored goals for the Atlantic Division-leading Penguins, who won their third straight game.
Jakub Voracek had two power-play goals, Zac Rinaldo and Kimmo Timonen also scored for the Flyers, who blew a 4-1 lead after the first period.
Both starting goalies Philadelphia’s Ilya Bryzgalov and Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury were pulled after allowing four goals.
Scott Hartnell had his tying goal disallowed near the midpoint of the third period because his stick was above the crossbar when he deflected Timonen’s shot into the net.
The Flyers fell to 11-13-1 and remain on the outside of the playoff race with 23 games remaining.
Bruins 4, Maple Leafs 2
BOSTON (AP) Tyler Seguin had two goals and an assist and Patrice Bergeron had one of each.
Anton Khudobin stopped 25 shots for Boston, which blew leads in each of its previous two games and lost both.
David Krejci also scored for Boston, and Brad Marchand had a pair of assists.
With the win, the Bruins moved three points ahead of Toronto in the Northeast Division while remaining one point behind first-place Montreal.
Nazem Kadri and Jay McClement scored for the Leafs, and Ben Scrivens made 21 saves for Toronto.
Blue Jackets 2, Canucks 1, OT
COLUMBUS, OHIO (AP) Matt Calvert carried the puck almost from end to end, twice avoiding opposing players, before skating to the slot and scoring on a rising wrist shot.
Calvert took a pass from Fedor Tyutin deep in the defensive zone and chipped the puck along the right boards while twice fighting off defenders. He then went unimpeded to the right hash before whipping the puck high over the glove side of goalie Cory Schneider.
Sergei Bobrovsky had 34 saves and R.J. Umberger also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have points in their last five games and have won three in a row both season highs.
Henrik Sedin tied the game early in the third period for Vancouver. Schneider finished with 25 saves.
Red Wings 3, Oilers 0
DETROIT (AP) Jimmy Howard made 22 saves, and Jakub Kindl and Cory Emmerton scored in the second period to lift the Detroit Red Wings over the Edmonton Oilers 3-0 on Thursday night.
Justin Abdelkader’s empty-net goal put the game out of reach.
Howard made 36 saves in a win Tuesday against Colorado, but coach Mike Babcock wasn’t all that impressed with his team’s overall performance that night. The Red Wings were sharper defensively against Edmonton and took control in the second period, when they outshot the Oilers 15-7.
Detroit is 10-0-1 in its last 11 regular-season games against Edmonton.
Jets 2, Lightning 1
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Bryan Little scored a tiebreaking goal late in the third period and Al Montoya made 28 saves.
Little slid the puck from in-close past goalie Anders Lindback with 4:08 to play. Winnipeg also got a goal from Eric Tangradi.
The Jets were beaten by the Lightning 8-3 on Feb. 1. This outcome was much different.
Steven Stamkos got his 18th goal this season for the Lightning, who have lost six of seven.
Stamkos tied it at 1 when he skated into the low slot and put a shot past Montoya after taking a pass from Martin St. Louis 6:57 into the third period. St. Louis has five assists and seven points during a five-game points streak.
Canadiens 4, Hurricanes 2
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Brandon Prust and Lars Eller each had a goal and two assists for Montreal Canadiens.
Eller’s goal at 6:09 of the third period gave Montreal the lead for good and P.K. Subban added a power-play goal to make it 4-2.
The Canadiens, playing their third game of a five-game road trip, were outshot 43-28, but Carey Price made 41 saves to earn his 12th win of the season.
Carolina goalkeeper Justin Peters, playing his second straight game since being called up from Charlotte of the AHL, made 24 saves.
Blues 6, Coyotes 3
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Patrik Berglund scored twice in a span of 2:22 for St. Louis.
Chris Stewart got a goal and two assists, David Perron added four assists, and Scott Nichol, Vladimir Sobotka and Alex Pietrangelo also scored as the Blues won after two straight losses.
David Moss scored a short-handed goal, Keith Yandle had a power-play goal and Shane Doan added his second goal in three games for the Coyotes, who have lost two straight.
After Stewart gave the Blues a 1-0 lead on a long rebound to the bottom of the right circle, a series of defensive miscues led to four of the next five goals.
Stars 5, Kings 2
LOS ANGELES (AP) Jaromir Jagr had his first multi-goal game since opening night, Brenden Morrow got the go-ahead goal in the third period, and the Stars ended the Kings’ six-game home winning streak.
Jagr and Cody Eakin connected on power plays for Dallas’ first two goals after penalties against Los Angeles defenseman Keaton Ellerby. Jagr converted a rebound of Jamie Benn’s shot with 10:20 remaining, his ninth of the season and 674th of his career 10th on the NHL’s all-time list.
Jagr’s three-game goal streak is his longest since his final four games of the 2007-08 regular season with the Rangers. The nine-time All-Star and 1999 MVP spent the next three years out of the NHL before returning last season with Philadelphia, and has 27 goals in 95 games since his comeback began.
