Man charged with kicking police canine, officers

DUPONT - A Pittston man was arrested by police on Saturday for allegedly kicking a police canine and officers.

Jamie Calloway, 32, of Union Street, was charged with three counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment, two counts of disorderly conduct, and one count each of flight to avoid apprehension, resisting arrest and three traffic offenses.

Calloway was arraigned by District Judge Paul Roberts in Kingston and remained jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility on Monday for lack of $25,000 bail.

According to the criminal complaint:

Dupont police stopped Calloway for speeding on Pittston Avenue on Saturday.

Police learned Calloway was driving a vehicle with a suspended license and was wanted by authorities in Montgomery County.

After Calloway exited his vehicle, he ran away and was chased by officers and Hughestown police canine Baron.

Calloway was found in the woods by Baron sitting on the ground.

Police alleged in the criminal complaint that Calloway kicked the canine several times, and fought with officers until he was apprehended.

A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled on June 8 in Central Court.
