Man shot in W-B, no arrests made yet

Kingston man shot in elbow at Bradford Street apartment and then left trail of blood in neighborhood, police said.

WILKES-BARRE – A Kingston man was taken to a hospital for a gunshot wound to his elbow on Friday evening.

City police said 23-year-old Akeem Sams, of Penn Street, suffered non-life threatening injuries and remained hospitalized at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

A Bradford Street apartment is the focus of the investigation, said Wilkes-Barre police Lt. Steve Olshefski.

Sams told police he was inside 62 Bradford St. when an unknown man came to the door and fired at him, Olshefski said. Sams then ran out of the home and headed toward Covell Street.

Police received a report of a gunshot victim at 37 Covell St. at 6:15 p.m.

The victim originally told police he was shot on Blackman Street by three unknown men. Police searched a wooded area and an old railroad bed for evidence in between Covell and Arch streets.

A trail of blood from a guardrail on Arch Street led police through an alley to the Bradford Street address, where the shooting occurred.

Before the victim’s statement to a detective at the hospital Friday night, police could not make certain where the shooting occurred until they received statements from witnesses and gathered physical evidence at 62 Bradford St.

Witnesses who lived nearby reported hearing two “bangs.”

Police knocked on the door of the apartment several times but nobody answered. After numerous attempts, officers kept the unit under close surveillance. Neighbors were told to stay inside.
