HAZLETON – Applications to participate in the Hazleton area’s biggest parade are now available.
The Funfest Committee announced that schools, clubs and organizations from the Greater Hazleton Area are welcome to participate in the Funfest Parade on Sept. 13. Groups can enter a float or marching unit at no charge and will be eligible for numerous prizes. The National Judges Association will judge entrants.
Parade Committee Chairwoman Cindy Hendricks said nearly 100,000 people are expected to crowd downtown streets for the parade – one of the largest in Northeastern Pennsylvania – and tens of thousands more viewers can watch the live broadcast on WYLN-TV Channel 35.
There is no fee to participate in the parade, but all participants must provide a detailed description of their entry ahead of time, and it must be approved by the parade vcommittee.
Monitors will be stationed along the route to ensure rules are followed and the parade is not held up in any way. The parade starts at McKenna’s Corners – the intersection of South Broad, North Broad and West Broad streets and Winters Avenue – in West Hazleton at 2:30 p.m. and follows a nearly two-mile route into downtown Hazleton and the Funfest Street Fair before ending on North Pine Street.
This year’s parade theme is “Funfest Spotlights the Movies.” First-, second- and third-place trophies will be awarded to the entries that best use the theme. Three trophies will also be awarded for Outstanding School Band, Outstanding Independent Band and Outstanding Float. Other award categories are Outstanding Marching Group-Junior-School Organization, Outstanding Marching Group-Senior-School Organization, Outstanding Marching Group-Non-School, Outstanding Drum Major, Outstanding Percussion, Outstanding Parade Participant and Best Appearing Emergency Unit.
Call 455-1509 or 1-800-OK-FFEST or e-mail funfest@hazletonchamber.org for more information. Parade applications may be downloaded from www.funfestpa.org.
