NANTICOKE -- Nanticoke City Council will conduct a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for the purposes of considering the sale of real estate and any other necessary business.

HARRISBURG – The state Senate on Friday unanimously approved a resolution sponsored by Senate Democratic leader Robert J. Mellow, D-Peckville, calling for a thorough study on the impact of tax-exempt real estate on municipalities.

Mellow’s proposal would require the state legislative budget and finance committee, state Community Development and Local Government Commission to conduct a thorough study that would be due this November.

Mellow said the study would give lawmakers an in-depth understanding of problems and possible solutions ranging from the effectiveness of community development programs to the prospect of providing state financial assistance.

HARVEYS LAKE – A comprehensive package of drinking water tests will be available to residents on Saturday. The tests will be done by Wilkes University together with the Harveys Lake Environmental Advisory Council.

The cost of the testing package is $75. The Wilkes University Water Quality Laboratory will measure water for pH, conductivity, turbidity, total coliform, nitrate-nitrite, phosphate, fecal coliform, fecal streptococcus, corrosively , hardness, iron, manganese and copper.

Interested residents can pick up water sampling kits at the Harveys Lake Borough Building meeting room from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Friday, and drop off their water samples at the same place Saturday morning between 10 a.m. and noon. Payment in full for the testing will be due at that time. Confidential results will be mailed to participants within two weeks of testing.

The testing follow-up and question and answer session will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, by Brian Oram, a professional biologist and director of the Wilkes University Center for Environmental Quality.

ASHLEY – Ashley Borough Council has announced the 2008 trash and recycling fee for the second half of the year is now being collected at the tax office. The current blue tags expire on Friday. The fee for the second half of the year is $75 and can be paid up until Saturday. After that date the fee will be $85. The fee is collected in the tax office every Monday and Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. and every Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Tags can also be obtained by sending a check or money order payable to Ashley Borough to 10 N. Main St., Ashley, or by depositing payment in the drop-off box in the vestibule of the municipal building 24-hours a day. When using this method, please add $1.50 to the check amount for postage. Please allow sufficient mailing time for delivery of tags.
