WILKES-BARRE – Lois Simms knows it’s important to stay up on the latest technology. The Wilkes-Barre grandmother has some experience using computers; still, she felt there were some things she could learn.

So, Tuesday she took a basic beginner computer course offered at the Osterhout Free Library.
She was one of eight people taking a free computer class offered at the library as part of the Senior Technology and Recreation Training program sponsored by a grant the library received from The Luzerne Foundation.
The program will provide several computer classes through February and March for adults over 50. Some of the classes will teach people how to look up maps, trip planning, use the PPL utility Web site to lower their utility bills, set up an e-mail account and download music, movies and podcasts onto MP3 players.
Simms pointed out it is harder for older people, like herself, to learn how to use computers.
When she was younger technology did not change nearly as rapidly as it does today.
Rotary and touch-tone phones were in homes and businesses but didn’t have the capability to send e-mails, surf the Web or send photos like many cell phones can today.
“If you are young and little, it is much easier than when you are older. The hardest part for people is to get on and start using the Internet. If you actually get on the computers, you can sit and learn and learn, but really you have to sit down and do it,” Simms said.
Computer instructor Weavre Cooper said she’s noticed the students can operate computers more efficiently than they could before the class.
“I love working with these people. They are excited to learn. They are here because they want to be here. Nobody is forcing them to apply the skills right away, so they are getting to explore it,” Cooper said.
