Nuangola flood maps can be inspected

NUANGOLA – Borough residents will be able to review the Federal Emergency Management Agency maps that delineate areas that are prone to flooding. Residents can see the maps at the Marion Sutherland Kirby Library, 35 Kirby Ave., Mountain Top, during normal operating hours.

Residents may also contact the borough at 868-5808 and leave a message to schedule an appointment.

Borough Council President Regina Plodwick indicated, “There is no specific list of addresses located on the floodplain maps; the maps delineate an area.”

Any borough homeowner may apply to FEMA to be included in this delineation with a submission of a letter of map amendment. This letter must include the year the structure was built, if it’s on a natural grade or if fill has been utilized to elevate the area, among other factors.

There may be a possible cost to the homeowner for this determination.

However, any homeowner may apply for flood insurance, with a key resource for that being the homeowner’s insurance agent.

At the borough council meeting on Nov. 24, residents were notified of the maps and the right to appeal.

They were also notified that if any homeowner would like to be added to or deleted from the floodplain map, the homeowner may do so during the 90-day appeal process that will expire at the end of February 2010.

The maps will remain at the Kirby Library until March 1, 2010.
