Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee for president of the United States, will visit Schott Glass in Duryea today.
“Sen. Obama will speak at Schott Glass, 400 York Ave., and will outline his plans to jump-start our economy, provide middle class tax relief and get America moving in the right direction again,” said Sean Smith, an Obama campaign spokesman.
The event is by invitation only and not open to the public, Smith said.
“We were told Sen. Obama will be at Schott Glass at 11:45 a.m. Friday morning,” said state Rep. John Yudichak, D-Nanticoke. “He will hold a town meeting for the employees to ask questions, then he will tour the plant.”
Obama’s airplane is expected to land at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport around 10 this morning, sources said.
After his stop in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Obama is expected to head to New Jersey.
The Obama campaign visited several area businesses this week to determine where the candidate would appear. Sources said Offset Paperback in Dallas, A. Rifkin Co. in Hanover Township and Pepperjam in Wilkes-Barre were considered, as well as Certainteed in the Crestwood Industrial Park, Mountain Top.
Obama campaigned in York and Lancaster Thursday. Obama’s running mate, Scranton native Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., will be in Pennsylvania today. He is scheduled to speak in Langhorne.
Obama and Biden are opposed by Republican Sen. John McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.
